This client fell in love with the charm of a real fixer-upper on the banks of the Tiber River, in historic Ellicott City, Maryland. The house was built in the late 1800’s and was physically deteriorated to the point of it being uninhabitable.
The remodeling of the home had inherent challenges and ITI Construction Services, Inc. spent a great deal of time working with the Howard County Historic Commission. In addition, with a modest budget and out of the ordinary construction requirements, the job was not what one would consider an easy task. In addtion, the existing house footprint had to remain intact with no horizontal expansion and a limited vertical expansion.
Some of the unique features of this whole house remodel include:
- compliance with Howard County Historic Commission,
- melding the original 1800/1900 turn of the century character, with more
modern materials with enhanced durability and performance,
- plank board and baton Alaskan yellow cedar siding,
- in-floor heating under bamboo wood flooring and base board hot
water heating combination,
- country kitchen,
- recycled bathroom lavatory and tub, complimented by ceramic lined
shower stalls with frameless glass shower doors
- post and canter lever footing and foundation system
- custom made stair newel posts with cherry wood caps
- cement board crawl space skirt
By melding a sensitivity for history with aesthetic materials and modern quality products, the homeowner realized her dreams and now has a home to inhabit and enjoy, for years to come!
